Abstract
The city of Los Angeles, California is popular for several elements internationally. However, the true essence of the city is found in what for many is not even a city. The suburbs of Los Angeles are what characterize it as a unique city in the world, because their size makes them unique. This proyect aims to contextualize suburban Los Angeles in relation to the rest of the United States, characterize the suburbs of the plains and the hills and, finally, confront them in a comparative analysis. For this, the approach made by Reyner Banham in his work "Los Angeles, The Architecture of Four Ecologies" is taken as a basis. In addition, the study and analysis of the city and of each of the selected fragments is carried out using the Layer Cake method, using planimetry at various scales and with different layers of analysis, which help to correctly understand each of the elements that make up these neighborhoods. With the study carried out in this work it is concluded, among other things, that the suburbs of Los Angeles are the most remarkable element of the city due to its size. In addition, the essential configuration of its different neighborhoods is similar. The main difference in all cases is the topography of each area, which will directly define the roads, as well as the building density of each one of the neighborhoods.
