Abstract
The global pandemic by the SARS-CoV-2 virus caused an unprecedented large-scale
health emergency even in countries with strong public health systems such as those in
Europe. In Spain, the health Humanitarian Aid (HA) organizations carried out different
projects to reinforce the national health system that collapsed in the first weeks of the
pandemic.
In this dissertation we analyzed the actions that were carried out in the field of HA by
the main non-governmental organizations, through the analysis of the publications,
work memories and a series of personal interviews to humanitarian workers who partici pated in these projects.
The aim is to investigate and analyze the impact that this humanitarian work had on the
population and on the health management of the pandemic. The results and the discus sion show how the humanitarian work that was carried out with an epidemic approach
in our context was based on the learning and experience obtained in the work in Ebola
epidemics, which demonstrates that HA brings secondary benefits. As a conclusion, the
health management of the pandemic in our country was complicated due to political
inexperience in emergencies and the advisory role of humanitarian workers was decisi ve, and although there was resistance from managers and institutions, a very valuable
work was carried out supporting and reinforcing hospitals and residences for the elderly.
