Abstract
Humanitarian needs are increasing to the point of becoming unsustainable. Within this new context, the unstoppable development of technological innovations is a key tool in addressing them, especially in the field of health.

This document consists of a bibliographical review which attempts to provide an understanding of the concept of humanitarian innovation, its historical evolution which shows the growing interest in it and the position it occupies in Spanish development cooperation. Among the new trends in HI, the need for a new management model which focuses on communities affected by crises, generates partnerships, especially in the area of funding, and includes technological development, is becoming evident.
It is these technological innovations, especially applied to healthcare countries in crisis, on which we have focused our greatest interest; while the results show promising opportunities for more efficient humanitarian healthcare, they also raise an extensive ethical debate about the new risks involved in their application, mainly in terms of security, privacy and increased inequalities among the most vulnerable people. This has motivated us to analyse the main published proposals and recommendations that seek to mitigate these risks and guide humanitarian actors in their participation in innovative projects, detecting a worrying absence of specific legislation by governments that would not allow malpractice that violates human rights.
