Abstract
This research applies for the first time the studyof the linguistic landscape —LL— in the Madrid municipality ofGetafe. The objective is to show the diversity of languages in writ-ten signs of a private nature, as well as to relate languages with thefunctions and values they arouse. We have a corpus of 250 photos inwhich at least one language other than Spanish appears. Consideringthe communities of origin of the immigrant population in Getafeand the repercussions of globalization in terms of language intercon-nection, we analyze the orientation of multilingualism in Getafe. Weargue that the analysis of the diversity of languages visible on thepublic space needs to coordinate quantitative and qualitative factors. In our study we perceive this multilingualism with a clear orienta-tion towards English, while the signs in different languages acquire a minority role. That is why the asymmetry in the representativenessof the languages leads us to nuance the multilingual nature of theGetafe LL.
