Intelectuales del s. XVII : sus aportaciones a la epigrafía de la Bética

Abstract

Se estudia el ms. II 158 de la Biblioteca de Palacio, una miscelánea de papeles que pertenecían al canónigo hispalense Martín Vázquez Siruela y que contiene tanto cartas enviadas a él por eruditos antiquarios como una relación suya de inscripciones latinas de diversos lugares de la Península. Constituye, por ello, una fuente de primer orden para la vida intelectual del siglo XVII en lo que se refiere a la revisión de la tradicional historia de España a partir de los testimonios existentes. La relación epigráfica permite precisar la procedencia y lectura de una serie de inscripciones de la Bética amén de ofrecer algunas inéditas; en total, se tratan veintiséis epígrafes.

The article deals with the manuscript nr. II 158 of the Library of the Royal Palace in Madrid, a collection of diverse papers which once had belonged to Martín Vázquez Siruela of Seville. Besides an inventory of Latín inscriptions from various parts of the Iberian Península it contains correspondence of Siruela with leamed Spanish antiquarians. It thus constitutes a first-rate source for intellectual life in the 17th century in as far as it was concerned with critical revision, based on materially existing testimonies, of the traditional writing of Spanish history. The epigraphic inventory, apart from giving several inedited texts, allows to correct findspots and readings of a fair number of epigraphs from Roman Baetica; altogether 26 inscriptlons are here treated.
