Piratas o estadistas : la política exterior del reino vándalo durante el reinado de Genserico

Abstract

Los vándalos llegados a África desde Hispania en 429, conducidos por su rey Genserico, establecen desde el 439 un reino con capital en Cartago; muy pronto tenemos noticias de ataques a las ciudades de Sicilia y a las costas de Italia moidional, ataques que cesan a partir del 442 cuando Genserico firma un tratado con el Imperio occidental por el que se le reconocen sus conquistas. A mentido se ha hablado de piratería vándala y se ha llegado a decir que los vándalos fueron los antecesores de los piratas berberiscos del siglo XVI. Pero ¿era la piratería un fin en sí mismo o el arma utilizada por un hábil negociante para lograr sus objetivos?

The Vandals, led by their King Geiseric, arrived in Africa from Hispania in 429 and soon established a Kingdom with its capital at Carthage. In the following years we hear of their attacks to several cities of Sicily and also to the coasts of southem Italy. Those raids finished as soon as Geiseric concluded a treaty with the westem enqjeror Valentinian; that treaty recognized the possession of the lands already conquered by the Vandals. Vandal piracy has been a common term used by ancient writers and modem historians. Vandals even have been considered the predecessors of the Barbary pirates of the XVIth. Century. But, was piracy their real goal or the way chosen by a clever negotiator to get his purposes?
