Diderot was, undoubtely, one of the most paradigmatic incamations of modem man and of his protean character, but at the same time he establishes a constant dialogue with the classical Antiquity's legacy, with such a depth only reached in the 18th century by Rousseau. This paper analyzes especially the process of Diderot's ideological Identification with Diogenes, Socrates and Seneca from the point of view of modem thought. Diderot disgueses himself under the masks of the ancient wise man when facing the problems of his own time.
