Abstract
The Peloporaiesian war deeply transformed the Greek concept and practice of war which, being up so far an agonistic war, came to be a "total war".
The aim of war changed, ant the new political intentionality which now lay in
imposing the hegemony on the Greek world altered the hoplite's mission. This
new way of regarding the war required a systematic resort to mercenaries and a
new strategy, with tactical changes like the appearance of raids and the
emergence, through the assaulting tactics, of the poliorcetic which resulted in the
pitched battle having less and less importance. What characterized the fourth
century was the appeareance of mobility which demanded both lighter arms and
a more especialized conunand. The Peloponnesian war, on altering the art of
fighting and the concept of war in itself, ctianged the role of the citizens in it, and
contributed to the crisis of the poleis as well as the collapse of Greece.
