Abstract
The uncontrolled rise of photovoltaic and wind installations are endangering the habitat of the bird community of Mediterranean rainfed crops. The main objective of this work is to identify and spatially delimit the distribution areas of the Eurasian bustard in Spain, so that it is possible to carry out a correct planning and evaluation of the foreseeable impact of renewable energy production infrastructures, or of any other that modifies or destroys the habitat of the species. Through the locations obtained through censuses and reports, the first map has been generated that represents the distribution of the species, its home ranges and its core areas. In addition, it has been compared with the Special Protection Areas for birds, Important Bird Areas, and the environmental zoning map for the implementation of renewable energies (photovoltaic), prepared by the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. It has been detected that the distribution is highly fragmented and that 55.80% of the area identified as the species' home range is outside protected areas and it is proposed: 1) to create larger habitat patches, until reaching the union of the closest ones through a plan for the restoration of the traditional agricultural habitat; 2) a significant area of arable land (30%) is not cultivated, tilled or treated for a minimum period of two years; 3) active conservation measures must be established, with efficient management, real planning and the provision of material, economic and human resources; 4) it is proposed to prioritize the burial of the lines that cross the identified areas and proceed to the effective signaling of the rest and 5) encourage new energy projects to be located in highly humanized, degraded areas or in their immediate surroundings.
