Abstract
The need for mining resources is undeniable, however, the extractions are very
destructive to the environment and therefore restoration activities on these lands is
important. The techniques used in restoration are very diverse and in the case of mining
areas they have experienced numerous advances, being the GeoFluvTM method and the
Natural Regrade software one of the most advanced and complete tools nowadays.
The ecological restoration carried out in 2012 at the El Machorro mine with these tools
was a success from a hydrological and erosion point of view. Throughout this study we
have evaluated (1) how the vegetation has developed in three areas with different
substrates almost a decade after restoration with the GeoFluvTM method, (2) the changes
produced in the coverage and the richness of species in the last five years, and (3) the
persistence of the sown species in the initial revegetation. For this, a sampling of 127
quadrats of 50 x 50 cm has been carried out, in which their richness, coverage and
frequency have been studied.
A total of 116 species were recognized, belonging to 84 genera and 21 families.
The results show that:
• The reconstruction of the relief with the GeoFluvTM method favors the
colonization and evolution of the vegetation.
• The evolution of vegetation has been positive after five years, as the levels of
species richness and vegetation cover have increased.
• The treatment of the substrate with organic amendment and topsoil produce an
increase in the coverage and richness of plant species.
• The sowing carried out during the restoration work was effective, with 9 of the 13
sown species persisting over time.
