Un final inventado para el cuento del escolar y la viuda del "Decameron"

Abstract

Este largo y bien elaborado cuento de Decameron VIII,7, por razones aún desconocidas, quedó sin concluir en la versión castellana del libro recogida en el manuscrito escurialense J.II.21, y aparece en la primera edición impresa de Sevilla 1496 con un final inventado, muy reducido, que deforma la estructura del relato original y traiciona la precisión de su planteamiento. Para difundir esta versión del cuento y ensayar un acercamiento a los problemas de la versión castellana, en sus dos testimonios, edito aquí el texto, sin pretender una versión filológica ni definitiva del mismo y lo cotejo con la versión italiana de P para sugerir además la hipótesis de su posible dependencia de la rama de P , que ofi-ecía lecciones más difíciles que el traductor no supo resolver. Por último, el cotejo del texto del manuscrito con el de la edición impresa ofi-ece datos que podrían confirmar que ambos son copia de una transcripción precedente, como ya sugirió C. Bourland.

This long, well-written tale, "Decameron" (VIII,7), was left unfinished, due to yet unknown reasons, in the Spanish translation found in the manuscript J.II.21 from El Escorial. In the first edition printed in Seville in 1496 it has an invented and very reduced ending, which distorts the structure of the original tale and betrays the accuracy of the plot. In order to spread this translation of the tale and try out an approach to the problems of the Spanish translation in both texts, I publish the text here, without pretending to ofFer a philological or definitive translation. I also compare it to the Italian text in P to suggest, moreover, the hypotesis of its possible dependence on the P branch, which offered more difficult readings not solved by the translator. Finally, when comparing the text of the manuscript with the printed text, some evidence is found which could confírm that both are a copy of a previous transcription, as C. Bourland has already suggested.
