Abstract
Abandoned agricultural lands take over a large area in Europe and are expected to increase. Many of them, especially in Mediterranean basin, have low natural regeneration, therefore assisted natural regeneration strategies would boost their evolution, reducing the restoration costs. The Eurasian magpie, characteristic of these environments, is a great disperser of nut-producing forest species with which have a mutualistic relationship, having very specific dispersive patterns. However, for the magpie dispersal to be effective, the plants recruitment at the dispersal sites must also be effective. To determine if the magpie should be considered in restoration strategies, it was analyzed whether its dispersive patterns correlate with the first-year recruitment patterns of Quercus ilex. At the habitat scale, the tilled area, characterized by the least compaction and herbaceous competition, and preferably selected by the magpie, showed higher recruitment. At the sub-habitat scale, all showed similar recruitment, except in the trough of higher productivity but higher herbaceous competition, which is also preferred by the magpie, where the emergence was higher but with lower growth. At the microsite scale, the first-year recruitment did not differ beneath tree canopies and in gaps, interspaces between canopies, probably due to the mild climatic conditions of the year of the experiment. The dispersive patterns of the magpie coincided with the most adequate sites for the first-year recruitment of Q. ilex, demonstrating its importance in the natural regeneration in abandoned agricultural lands. Thus, it is recommended to promote the Eurasian magpie as an assisted natural regeneration strategy in agroforestry systems.
