Abstract
No obstante,
The arrival of the pandemic of COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, one of the
diseases with greater scope since the second half of the last century, has been a pivotal moment
both because of the appearance of a new highly specialized language and because it has
generated the necessity to create a vaccine to urgently fight against the disease.
The main objective of the present study lies in doing research to find potential
terminological challenges which faces the translator of COVID-19-related patient information
leaflets of vaccines. To achieve the desired objectives, a bibliographic review of existing
materials on medical translation will be undertaken and, more specifically on our main field of
interest, this is, the pharmaceutical field.
Furthermore, the proposed hypothesis stems from the lack and recent need to have
materials from vaccine patient information leaflets. To do so, we will tackle these challenges
or difficulties by means of a corpus-based analysis of COVID-19-related patient information
leaflets of vaccines to then accomplish a terminological extraction of the most frequent terms
or phraseological units and, finally, elaborate a glossary with them. In order to confirm the
aforementioned hypothesis, we will address the following points: (i) elaboration of the
theoretical framework in which we reflect upon specialized translation, documentation and
terminology, (ii) introduction of the methodology and sample data, (iii) elaboration of the
corpus and terminographic work (iv) and we will finally mention the final remarks which
confirm or reject the initial hypothesis.
Once the study has been performed, the results confirm that the translation of COVID19-related patient information leaflets of vaccines shows some challenges, indeed. The existing
variability between the selected terms does not offer comprehension difficulties. Nonetheless,
we have mainly detected the use of determinologization strategies and of Greek and Latin
prefixes and suffixes. Not surprisingly the obtained results were fairly homogeneous. However,
we have managed to gather information about the most frequent terms and phraseological units
found in the patient information leaflets of the chosen vaccines and their respective
translations
