Abstract
The use of plastics has multiplied in recent years due to the ease with which many products can be marketed using them. Its main drawback lies in the recycling rates and the fact that its degradation in the environment is very slow. When decomposed, microplastics are formed, whose main problem is in the pollution of the atmosphere and the oceans, passing to the animals that receive their damage directly and this has a very serious impact on public health due to their consumption.
The main objective of this TFG is to study the problems caused by microplastics in human health due to their consumption, exposure and toxicity. As specific objectives of the TFG, the existing literature on microplastics present in water, in the air and in the diet will be reviewed in order to know how it affects human health. To carry out this objective, a systematic review methodology has been carried out.
Studies have been found in which it is evident that microplastics produce alterations in living beings. They are capable of entering tissues and organs, causing cell damage, inflammation, oxidative stress and even localized immune responses to these substances and even the deterioration of vital functions due to their presence in food and beverages.
It is necessary to establish a stricter control for this type of contaminant, in addition to implementing measures to reduce its environmental presence and carry out more studies to analyze its damage to health.
