Abstract
informativo y no oficial.
mismo objetivo, el objetivo de comunicar After the arrival of more and more foreigners to Spain, the need for translators and interpreters
in public services has been increasing. After the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis all around
the world, which provoked a global pandemic, this need became clearer, especially in the health
sector, due to the limitations of movement between countries imposed by the virus itself and
the fact that many foreign people were trapped in countries where they did not speak the official
language.
The main objective of this dissertation is to analyse the main translation approaches that have
been adopted when translating texts related to COVID-19, considering that the two main
approaches are, on the one hand, creating a translation closer to the original text, and, on the
other hand, creating a translation adapted to the conventions of the target culture, and the
reasons why one method or the other was adopted.
The hypothesis we put forward is that texts produced by official bodies and which have the
status of official documents tend to be translated more literally, without resolving any cultural
differences that may arise, unlike texts that are more informative and unofficial in nature. For
this reason, and due to the nature of the texts which are going to be analysed, this dissertation
is framed within the field of medical translation. In order to confirm this hypothesis, within our
dissertation we will address the following topics: a) the theoretical framework in which we set
our dissertation in order to make the analysis clearer, b) the exposition of our body of work, the
methodology and the specific theories on which we base our analysis, c) the practical analysis
of a series of collected materials, and d) the exposition of the results and final conclusions. In
addition, since our dissertation belongs to the field of translation and interpreting in public
services, we will also comment on the current status of this specific translation and interpreting
field compared to previous years.
Finally, the results obtained confirm our initial hypothesis that official documents are translated
more literally, while unofficial documents are more adapted to the receivers of the text.
Nevertheless, both translation approaches share the same objective, the objective of
communicating.
