Abstract
In this paper, the relationship between cognition, culture and language is reviewed and
applied to the teaching and learning of Spanish as a foreign language in the case of Chinese
learners, taking as a starting point the assumption that thought, culture and language are tools of
cognition. Knowing the cognitive differences between Chinese and Spanish speakers, if any, will
serve to teach and learn Spanish more efficiently. For this purpose, in this work, the Spanish
quantitative system has been compared with the Chinese classificatory system, which has led to the
hypothesis of the possible existence of a common cognitive base underlying both linguistic systems.
The theoretical part has been based on the thinking of figures from the philosophy of language
(Wilhelm von Humboldt), linguistic anthropology (Edward Sapir and Benjamin L. Whorf) and
cognitive linguistics (Pedrosa, Álvarez González, Gomila, Anna Wierzbicka, Dan Slobin, Llopis
García, Ruiz Campillo and Castañeda Castro). On the more applied side, studies on Chinese
classifiers and Spanish quantifiers have been carried out mainly by Ni, Liu, Marco Martínez and
Rovira Esteva.
