Abstract
Micro and nanoplastics are considered pollutants of emerging concern, which have become a global problem due to their ubiquity in aquatic, terrestrial and aerial ecosystems. Their characteristics such as hydrophobicity allow them to adsorb microorganisms and contaminants on their surface, acting as vectors of contamination. The main emitters of micro and nanoplastics to ecosystems are wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), which through different processes and operations manage to eliminate part of these pollutants, but a certain fraction escapes the fluvial and terrestrial ecosystem causing effects on that ecosystem and the species that inhabit there, including humans. These materials also cause damage to the facilities of the treatment plants, producing different alterations in the biological reactors, therefore, it is convenient to remove them from the water through different mechanisms. Wetlands are also considered both as tertiary treatment of treatment plants and as wastewater treatment of small urban agglomerations and rural areas.
