Abstract
Public service translation and interpreting is becoming increasingly important within
the multicultural world especially in the healthcare sector. In recent years Spain has
experienced a massive increase in the level of immigrants in their country which has affected
the provision of language services in the healthcare sector. Conversely, the United Kingdom
has not suffered the impact of this immigration to the same extent, however it is worth noting
that it has a longer history of receiving immigrants. Due to this, the current research project is
a comparative study that aims to analyse the differences in the provision and quality of the
language services in the healthcare sector in Spain and the United Kingdom.
The objective of the investigation is to study the use and quality of language services
and communication methods within the healthcare systema in the United Kingdom and Spain.
To in investigate this, the study will contextualize the current and historic situation of the
provision and quality of language services with the information provided in the theory and the
analysis of the previous research. Continually, a primary study has been carried out relating to
the perceptions of healthcare staff about the language services available in their workplace.
After having conducted the study, the current investigation can suggest that, to a certain
extent, the language services in the United Kingdom seem to be of better quality and
availability. However, it is evident that there are many problems with the provision and quality
of language services in the healthcare sector, which is especially notable due to the lack of
services available during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is clear that, although the two countries
do provide some language support, there is still a lot of progress to be made in the sector so
that the services become sufficient.
