Abstract
sanitaria. Globalisation and migrations constitute an important reality around the globe,
as well as in Cadiz, Andalusia. In recent years, Cadiz has increased the number of
tourist arrivals and migrations by a huge margin. These flows of people with different
profiles translate into a public system, including healthcare, brim-full with
communicative challenges. Potential non-Spanish-speaking users of the Andalusian
Healthcare System encounter enormous cultural and linguistic barriers when accessing
the service, which could pose a risk to their health as well as poor compliance with their
fundamental rights when not provided with quality interpreting or mediation services.
This thesis' hypothesis implies that Cadiz is in fact a healthcare interpreting hotspot with
an important demand and clear needs, which unfortunately are not covered properly or
just partially, thus possible improvements can be achieved. The main objectives of this
study are to elaborate on the user profile of healthcare interpreting in the province, to
explore the supply of the service in public healthcare facilities and through other
organisations, ending with some possible service improvements based on the obtained
information. Three different survey models were conducted for healthcare workers,
NGO staff, and interpreting providers.
Once the study was carried out, it was confirmed that Cadiz has a significant flow of
non-Spanish-speaking patients, mainly British and Moroccan, whose cultural and
linguistic needs are not covered properly through healthcare interpreting.
