Abstract
Water, unifying and guilty of the birth of all things, runs silently but notoriously through the Agustin Rodríguez Sahagún Park, one of the limits within which this project moves. On the other side appears the grotesque and chaotic Tetuán de las Victorias, like a tangle of low houses and narrow streets which is interrupted by the other determining element of this intervention, the Paseo de la Dirección.
Thus, between two curves of very different characters, the opportunity arises. Where two worlds are separated, enjoyment; free time; green areas on the side of the district of Fuencarral-El Pardo and the city, its traffic and hectic pace on the opposite side. An "in between" that right now lives in the void and denies all its possibilities. We found an abandoned and fenced plot of 25,000 m2 with steep slopes and several high-speed roads that prevent any approach.
The urban, social and planning analysis of the site impose an urgent urban intervention that has been delayed for years and has been demanded since then by the neighbors. But the project cocktail is completed with the observation of the existing elements around it: a piece of the Canal, sports areas and green areas, which makes this site a perfect candidate to become part of the Madrid triangle formed by two other vertices of the Canal Foundation (Chamartín and Chamberí).
Thus, an urban-scale action is encouraged with a joint response to solve the existing problems of connection and accessibility and, at the same time, to house a new space for the Canal Foundation, which will serve as a focus and attraction in this now revitalized place.
Following the guidelines set by the Foundation and its usual operation, the program is divided into three complementary and urgent modules for the neighborhood. The restoration module, the social module, with spaces requested by the neighbors for meetings and training, and the cultural module where a variety of events and programs take place, including the Canal Hall, which pays tribute to the recovered Valdeacederas Aqueduct.
All of this takes place within the framework of the same operation, but in two phases: the urban phase and the design phase. For this to happen, a system of colonization of the space is used by means of triangulated meshes that allow adapting to the problems of the terrain with all its slopes and gradients. It is also ideal for the appearance of these excavated spaces that house the Canal's modules and activities.
