Abstract
The Sierra Velluda strato volcano in the Andes mountains, is an inactive volcano, located in the Biobío region (Chile). A singular characteristic of the volcanos is its mountain glacier. The water stored in this glacier constitutes a key component in the hydrological dynamics of the sub-basins of the Laja River and the Duqueco River. Therefore, it is essential to have a better understanding of its spatial and temporal changes to propose the correct management of water resources.
The objective of this master's thesis is the analysis of this glacial mass. Determining the evolution of its extension, through remote sensing techniques and the precipitation regime of the area, have been used to assess the evolution of the glacier’s extension.
The coverage of the glacier was characterized using the available satellite images with a maximum of 5% cloud cover, obtained from December 1973 to January 2021. For the comparison, thresholds for mountain glaciers defined in NDSI>0,4 and NDSI>0,52 were used for the ETM, ETM+ and OLI/TIRS sensors I given the absence of the short-wave infrared band, the segmentation of the glacier area was determined using the NDVI and false color of bands in the case of the MSS sensor. That allowed to differentiate the water from the soil.
The numerical value of the NDSI was defined for the Sierra Velluda glacier, characterizing the surface area with a value of NDSI>0.87 for the images with the ETM, ETM+ and OLI/TIRS sensor. On the basis, it was determined that, to the current date there is a 67% decrease in the area of the Sierra Velluda glacier compared to the maximum area estimated in 1997 of approximately (~20 km2).
A direct relationship is established between the decrease in rainfall and the area of the glacier, when comparing the curve of accumulated deviations from the mean of the data recorded at weather stations in the Biobío region those stations close to the glacier.
In addition, using available databases and considering the temperature information available since 1958, it has been stablished the direct relationship between the increase of atmospheric temperature and the decrease in glacier in Sierra Velluda.
