Abstract
The aim of this study is to show, through selected examples, the main characteristics of Portuguese sculpture during the 65 years of life of Alfonso X the Wise, that is, during the government of four Portuguese kings. It is intended to underline and demonstrate how in these six decades Portuguese sculpture has remained, above all, rooted in the art inherited from the 12th century, in a clear resistance, even if, little by little, it gave in to the novelties of the style and iconography of the art of vanguard of Western Christianity – French Gothic.
