La última muerte antes del Imperio: historiografía castellana y providencialismo en torno al príncipe Miguel y al nacimiento del futuro Carlos V

Abstract

Con la muerte del príncipe don Juan en 1497, Isabel de Castilla y Aragón, reina de Portugal por su matrimonio con Manuel I, pasa a ser la sucesora de sus padres, los Reyes Católicos. Fallecida en el parto de su hijo Miguel, el recién nacido se convierte en el heredero de Castilla, Aragón y Portugal. Este príncipe, que podría haber cambiado el curso de la historia de la península ibérica, murió antes de cumplir los dos años, por lo que los derechos sucesorios recayeron en Juana, tercera hija de Isabel y Fernando. A través de su matrimonio con Felipe el Hermoso, la dinastía extranjera de los Habsburgo llegará a ser titular de la monarquía española. En este trabajo se analiza el tratamiento providencialista dado por los cronistas castellanos tanto a la muerte del príncipe Miguel como al nacimiento del futuro empe-rador Carlos V.

After the death of Prince Juan in 1497, Isabel de Castilla y Ara-gón, Queen of Portugal through her marriage to Manuel I, became the suc-cessor to her parents, the Catholic Monarchs. Given that she died during the labour of her son Miguel, the newborn became the heir to Castile, Aragon and Portugal. This prince, who could have changed the course of the history of the Iberian Peninsula, died before reaching the age of two, so the inhe-ritance rights fell to Juana, third daughter of Isabel and Fernando. Through her marriage to Philip the Handsome, the foreign Habsburg dynasty became the head of the Spanish monarchy. In this work we analyze the providentia-list treatment given by the Castilian chroniclers both to the death of Prince Miguel and to the birth of the future Emperor Carlos V.
