Abstract
The main objective of this Final Degree Project is to analyze the close relationship that has existed between architecture and the various arts in different stages of the 20th century around three specific conceptual categories, such as integration, contamination and collaboration. Precisely in a century in which modernity differentiated the processes of the different arts according to their specific means of expression, and that architecture expelled art as decoration, we have studied the diverse ways in which integrations or collaborations take place, always from the point of view of view of the discipline of architecture. In fact, how the arts have influenced the architectural project, or what they have contributed to it. The methodological structure of the work is built on the basis of two hypotheses. The first enunciates the categories of integration, contamination and collaboration, as primary parameters of study of the interrelation of the arts with architecture. The fact of trying to find their points of similarity and difference, substantially qualifying their meaning based on the different historical antecedents and project manifestations, has been crucial to understand the evolution of artistic-architectural relationships throughout the 20th century. Analyzing to what extent these three categories are reflected in the theory of each period, as well as in certain selected works, reveals a theoretical framework from which the second hypothesis of the work is born: the three categories are related to each other through a series of project parameters that constitute the proposed methodological outline of the analysis. The work applies the proposed methodology to the precise analysis of three case studies. The study for the painter Rémy Zaugg carried out by the architects Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron in direct collaboration with the artist; the collaborative exhibition project between Tadao Ando and various artists for the island of Naoshima; and the Jewish Museum in Berlin by the architect Daniel Libeskind, where a potential artistic component will be appreciated in the way of projecting and executing its architecture. In short, the work is divided into three parts: a theoretical framework where the guide categories of artistic-architectural relationships at different times of the 20th century are exposed, the relationship of these categories through a methodological sketch of common parameters and the application of these parameters to the analysis of a selection of paradigmatic case studies.
