Abstract
Brutalist architecture has always been a controversial current for society, especially for the generations that lived through the years of the Cold War, since, despite the fact that it was an architecture that emerged in the United Kingdom from the decade of the years 50s and developed throughout the West and in several Asian countries during the next twenty years, it was an architectural style that gained great importance in the Soviet Union largely due to the low price of concrete, and the utopian-socialist ideals derived from the Modern Movement. Therefore, these generations tend to perceive this architecture as radical, dehumanizing, cold and totalitarian. However, in recent years a revival of brutalism has begun to emerge in which a good part of society shows their admiration and enthusiasm for this type of architecture through social networks, as is the case with the hashtag #SOSBrutalism, which began in direct response to brutalist building demolitions taking place in various countries.
This change in the way of perceiving Brutalist architecture is directly related to the Cinema, since it is a style very present in this medium, especially in science fiction films and dystopian themes, thus producing a great approach of this architecture to the world population, and radically changing the perception of it.
The main objective of this Final Degree Project is to analyze the use and treatment given to brutalist architecture in the architectural space of cinema, and its relationship with the change in perception and social acceptance of this architectural movement.
