Abstract
The Corona de Espinas ("crown of thorns'') contains many of Fernando Higueras' obsessions. It captures the exaggeration and monumentality he would always express in his work. His "hedgehog" architecture which, along with the never built Cultural Center of Montecarlo, is an example of the timeless architecture Higueras liked to imagine.
The building, by the architects Fernando Higueras and Antonio Miró, went through several construction periods, adaptation projects and usage changes. In this compilation of construction reports we will see the successive changes made to the building (and take every last thorn out).
The architect's stubbornness takes form in a series of principies that became obsessions. Obsessions unavoidably altering the architectural elements. It is however this undetermined origin that has made possible far the building to go through severa! modifications and program changes over the last 30 years.
Since 1961, starting with the National Award of Architecture far the contraction of the Artistic Restoration Center up until the building we know today, there have been 7 different projects, including a 16-year stoppage of the works because of the construction company withdrawal. However, many architects agree about the great accuracy with which the concrete is constructed and the quality of its formwork- barely possible nowadays. The current deconstructive eccentricities of today's architecture seem like made of cardboard and flimsy wire when compared to the soundness of Higueras' work.
