Abstract
In this globalised world that we are living in, it is now more and more common that people with different nationalities go to medical centres where they hope they can be taken care of. This is a situation that they have to face and in which they expect, apart from being diagnosed, to be understood and be able to understand the health staff around them. For them, our role as interpreters is much more than essential. The aim of this Master’s Degree Thesis is to analyse and empower the role of the interpreters in areas as important as the medical- healthcare fields is, in such different contexts as they are Spain and the United Kingdom. Through and analysis of the society and the healthcare system of these two countries, we will try to find out how these interpreting systems work in hospitals and we will discuss different quandaries that our profession is facing. Among them, relating to the United Kingdom, we will try to find out how frequent it is to healthcare staff to contact interpreters in the Royal Sussex County Hospital of Brighton, because, as we know, many professionals there are foreigners. We will also discuss different situations that we ourselves had to face while working as interpreters in the Hospital Universitario HM of Madrid, and we will compare this system with the one established in the previous mentioned hospital in Brighton
