The sound and the fury : algunas claves para su lectura

Abstract

It seems obvious that while trying to say one word on The Sound and the Fury in 1991 one runs the risk of repeating what many others have said before, i.e. that it is a difficult work. But it is possible to "fan" this opinión by trying to find some of the clues which can help the reader to better understand such a masterpiece. It is true that Faulkner lays himself open to accusations of trying to torture the reader by abandoning him or her in the middle of a labyrinth. But it is the author himself who provides his "victim" with the appropriate clues to trace his way to the "exit". The stream-of-consciousness technique and the use of impressionistic elements create some confusion in the reader, but Faulkner again comes to the reader's aid providing the saving chronology of the Compson family. At the end an unstable balance and an ordered chaos is the comforting result. The reader finally concludes that the structure chosen by Faulkner is the only one possible.
