The Usage of Anglicisms: From Bilingual Dictionaries to Spanish Translation

Abstract

In the last 50 years, the English language has been converted into a global language and consequently words originating in English referred to as Anglicisms, can be found within the Spanish language. There are many attitudes of resistance to these foreign words, but nevertheless they have become both widely used and widely understood by Spanish language users. This research aims to examine the discrepancy between how Anglicisms are documented in official sources like dictionaries, and how they are used translation. To understand this, the usage of 21 internet-related was examined Anglicisms within several English-Spanish bilingual dictionaries to see how they are being documented. Following this I conducted a translation survey employing some of these 21 Anglicisms, those which had the least inclusion rate in bilingual dictionaries, to see if although they were not documented, they were being used by translators. My hypothesis is that Anglicisms are not well documented within dictionaries but are indeed used by language users and notably within translation. Part of the discrepancy between language use and language documentation is related to the differences between the linguistic fields of prescriptivism and descriptivism. The Spanish language has historically been and continues to be largely prescriptivist, whereas the English language has evolved from prescriptivist to descriptivist over time. The translation survey presented four Anglicism- riddled sentences in three different contexts. The sentences were analyzed to see how the translators affronted the Anglicisms, and if their choices changed based on audience. Conclusively, Anglicisms were used throughout the survey. Notably, Anglicisms were used more frequently in the sentences aimed at a younger audience. Many Anglicisms not documented in bilingual dictionaries were frequently used in the translations

En los últimos 50 años el idioma inglés se ha convertido en un idioma global y por consecuencia las palabras inglesas, llamadas anglicismos, existen dentro del idioma español. Hay muchas actitudes de resistencia a estas palabras extranjeras, pero sin embargo se han convertido en ampliamente utilizadas y comprendidas por los usuarios del idioma español. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo examinar la discrepancia entre la forma en que los anglicismos están documentados en fuentes oficiales como los diccionarios, y la forma en que se utilizan en la traducción. Para entender esto, examiné el uso de 21 anglicismos relacionados con Internet dentro de varios diccionarios bilingües para ver cómo están siendo documentados. Después de esto, realicé una encuesta de traducción empleando algunos de los 21 anglicismos, los que menos se incluían en los diccionarios bilingües, para ver si aunque no estaban documentados, estaban siendo usados por los traductores. Mi hipótesis es que los anglicismos no están muy documentados en los diccionarios, pero sí son utilizados por los usuarios de los idiomas y, en particular, en la traducción. Parte de la discrepancia entre el uso del lenguaje y la documentación del lenguaje está relacionada con las diferencias entre los campos lingüísticos del prescriptivismo y el descriptivismo.
