Abstract
Due to the great migratory movements and the increase of multicultural societies, the
health services of many countries, and in particular Spain, have had to adapt and treat
to patients and users who do not speak Spanish. The Spanish health system provides a
series of documents to users, such as informed consents. Consents must be written in a
language that the patient or user can understand and so they can be actively involves in
the decision making process related to their health. However, few hospitals have these
translations available and patients are rendered the information through sight
translation.
The aim of this Master’s thesis, will be to analyse a series of informed consents
belonging to the Comunitat Valenciana, the association Salud entre Cult uras and HM
Hospitales. In this analysis we will analyse the use of explicitations when translating
specialized terminology, as well as the errors that are made. In addition, we will take
into account the hybrid nature of this type of document and we will compare the
quantity of medical and legal terminology that is used in order to produce them.
