Traducir para las Naciones Unidas: análisis del Estilo ONU y de la traducción inglés-español en el Servicio de Actas Literales

Abstract

En la actualidad, la traducción institucional desempeña un papel fundamental en la comunicación entre países. Asimismo, sirve de gran utilidad para facilitar la comunicación entre las instituciones y delegaciones de cada país. Organismos como las Naciones Unidas tienen una función crucial en lo que respecta al desarrollo y la profesionalización de la traducción. Asimismo, las Naciones Unidas contribuyen a visibilizar la labor de los traductores y la importancia que tiene para la sociedad. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es estudiar la existencia del estilo ONU, que se compone de un conjunto de términos, expresiones y convenciones estilísticas muy marcadas que caracterizan a los textos de la Organización y los diferencia del resto de textos institucionales. Se trata de convenciones que van más allá de las normas establecidas y que definen un estilo propio. Este proyecto es un estudio descriptivo que se centra, más concretamente, en la traducción inglés-español de las actas literales derivadas de las reuniones y los debates de las Naciones Unidas, ya que esta sección posee unas características propias. La cuestión principal que se plantea es si existe el estilo ONU y cómo se manifiesta en la traducción de las actas literales. Como parte de ese estilo propio, la investigación trata de averiguar qué normas de traducción y estilo están al alcance de los traductores y cuáles son convenciones que no figuran en ningún recurso documental y se deben ir aprendiendo. Asimismo, se pretende determinar la presencia de un español internacional que difiere de las normas establecidas para el español peninsular. Para comprobar y dar respuesta a las cuestiones planteadas: a) se presentará el marco teórico al que pertenece el objeto de estudio, b) se comentarán las características principales de las actas literales, así como de los recursos y las herramientas tecnológicas de que disponen los traductores, c) se analizarán traducciones de actas literales y se elaborará una tabla con los datos obtenidos, y d) se realizará un análisis cualitativo de una serie de ejemplos en el que se comentarán aspectos significativos y se expondrán los resultados. Por último, se presentarán las conclusiones extraídas que confirman la existencia del estilo ONU y reflejan algunos patrones que sigue la traducción de actas literales en las Naciones Unidas.

Nowadays, institutional translation plays a fundamental role in the communication between countries. It also serves to facilitate communication between institutions and delegations in each country. Bodies such as the United Nations have a crucial role in the development and professionalization of translation. Besides, the United Nations help to make the work of translators and the importance it has to society more visible. The main objective of this research is to study the existence of the UN style, which is composed of a set of terms, expressions and defined stylistic conventions that characterise the Organization's texts and distinguishes them from other institutional texts. These are conventions that go beyond established norms and define their own style. This project is a descriptive study that focuses, more specifically, on the EnglishSpanish translation of verbatim records that derive from United Nations meetings and debates, as this section has its own characteristics. The main question is whether the UN style exists and how it is expressed in the translation of verbatim records. As part of this specific style, this research tries to find out what translation and style standards are available to translators and what conventions are not included in any documentation resource and must be therefore learned by professionals. The aim is also to identify the presence of an international sort of Spanish language that differs from the rules established for the Spanish from Spain. In order to verify and answer the questions raised: a) the theoretical framework to which the object of study belongs will be presented, b) the main characteristics of the verbatim records, as well as the resources and technological tools available to translators will be commented on, c) translations of verbatim records will be examined and a table of content will be drawn up with the data obtained, and d) a qualitative analysis will be carried out of a number of examples, in which relevant aspects will be commented on and the results will be presented. Finally, the conclusions drawn will be presented, which confirm the existence of the UN style and reflect some of the patterns followed in the translation of verbatim records at the United Nations.
