Panorama actual y claves para la interpretación/mediación en psico-oncología

Abstract

El cáncer es en la actualidad la segunda causa de muerte en España con más de doscientos cincuenta mil pacientes nuevos cada año. Además de ser mortífera, es una enfermedad capaz de sembrar el miedo y los más profundos temores en los recién diagnosticados pacientes y en aquellos que llevan un largo periodo de tratamiento. Superar esos miedos no es nada fácil cuando se debe someter a un tratamiento muy potente y que provoca gran variedad de efectos secundarios graves. Para aliviar esa tensión y esos miedos se hace fundamental el papel del psico-oncólogo en la atención integral del paciente, quien procura proporcionar un trato individualizado y de apoyo a sus pacientes y a los familiares que así lo precisen. Se ha conseguido demostrar que la psico-oncología mejora sustancialmente la calidad de vida de los enfermos, así como su satisfacción y motivación personales basándose, simplemente, en una comunicación efectiva y necesaria. Pero la efectividad de la comunicación puede verse truncada cuando el paciente oncológico no domina suficientemente la lengua española. En estas ocasiones, destaca la figura del intérprete como intermediario de la comunicación. Pero ¿Cómo debe prepararse un intérprete para trasvasar mensajes determinantes para la mejoría del paciente y tan cargados de sentimientos? ¿Qué necesita saber y qué puede esperar de esta clase de conversaciones? Dos serán los conceptos clave: empatía y respeto

Apart from being deadly, it is also a disease that instils fear and big worries in newly diagnosed patients and those who have undergone a long period of treatment. Overcoming these fears is not easy when patients have to receive a strong treatment that might cause a variety of serious side effects. In order to alleviate tension and allay fears, the role of psycho-oncologists in a comprehensive care of the patient turns to be crucial. The therapist will provide individualised treatment and support to their patients and family members who need it. It has been demonstrated that psychological support in cancer substantially improves the quality of life of patients, as well as their satisfaction and motivation in life, which can be simply achieved through effective and necessary communication. But the effectiveness of communication can be hindered if the cancer patient does not fully master the language spoken in the country. Under these circumstances, the presence of an interpreter as a language mediator is of vital importance. How should an interpreter get ready for conveying messages that are decisive for the patient's improvement? What do interpreters need to know and what can they expect from this kind of conversation? Empathy and respect will be the two key concepts
