Arquitectura y ciudad Juche: censura, propaganda y espacio público (1953 - 2020)

Abstract

En la mayoría de los casos, la actual arquitectura y urbanismo de una ciudad o país es el resultado de una evolución larga, basada en cambios y crecimientos orgánicos que se han llevado a cabo durante cientos de años. La variedad y el eclecticismo de su arquitectura nos permiten conocer y comprender cuáles son las diferencias, detalles y particularidades de su composición y diversidad social. Sin embargo, en el caso de Corea del Norte, partimos de un territorio destruido y devastado por la Guerra de Corea en 1950, en la que el nuevo régimen liderado por Kim Il Sung inició la construcción de una nueva ciudad con un lenguaje arquitectónico propio y particular, que permitiera reflejar las máximas, la grandeza y el poder de su nueva ideología, el Juche. La línea principal del trabajo, por un lado, analiza las características de esta nueva arquitectura norcoreana y cuáles han sido las tendencias arquitectónicas y urbanísticas extranjeras que han influido en la construcción de la nueva ciudad del régimen, ideal, perfecta e igualitaria. Por otro lado, a partir de este análisis también se estudiará cómo la arquitectura, pieza clave en la construcción del régimen, es utilizada como medio de propaganda y de control de la población, tanto extranjera como local. Sin embargo, el gran hermetismo del país y su política de autosuficiencia camuflan la existencia de una ciudad oculta al resto del mundo, muy distinta a la mostrada y construida por el régimen. Una ciudad precaria habitada por la sociedad contraria al régimen o que manifiesta su desacuerdo con la ideología Juche. Los escasos textos y testimonios que han estudiado este tema o que han conseguido burlar la censura son claves para entender cómo arquitectura, política e ideología guardan una estrecha relación.

In most cases, the current architecture and urban planning of a city or country is the result of a long evolution, based on changes and organic growth that have taken place over hundreds of years. The variety and eclecticism of its architecture allow us to know and understand what are the differences, details and particularities of its composition and social diversity. However, in the case of North Korea, we start from a territory destroyed and devastated by the Korean War in 1950, in which the new regime led by Kim Il Sung began the construction of a new city with its own architectural language, that allowed to reflect the maxims, the greatness and the power of his new ideology, the Juche. The main line of work, on the one hand, analyzes the characteristics of this new North Korean architecture and what have been the foreign architectural and urban trends that have influenced the construction of the new ideal, perfect and egalitarian city of the regime. On the other hand, based on this analysis, it will also be studied how architecture, a key piece in the construction of the regime, is used as a means of propaganda and control of the population, both foreign and local. However, the great secrecy of the country and its policy of self-sufficiency camouflage the existence of a city hidden from the rest of the world, very different from the one shown and built by the regime. A precarious city inhabited by a society opposed to the regime or that expresses its disagreement with the Juche ideology. The few texts and testimonies that have studied this issue or that have managed to circumvent censorship are key to understanding how architecture, politics and ideology are closely related.
