Abstract
Some forests Mediterranean species such as Pinus pinaster have fire traits and present, in
general, a good natural regeneration after fires, sometimes give rise to dense stands where
passive restoration is recommended in the short term, but which in the medium and long term
could have negative consequences on the future development of the stand. The application of
early thinning to dose the intraspecific competition has been proposed as a cheap alternative that
is carried out by forest services but is not sufficiently contrasted at a scientific level. It allows the
development of a better-quality stand, reducing the danger of fire in the medium term and the
vulnerability to possible fires as a result of global change (climate change and land abandonment).
This work presents the results of the study of different intensities of forest treatments in stands of
Pinus pinaster Ait. regenerated naturally after a fire in the "Fraguas" mountain in the province of
Guadalajara (Central Iberian System). The objective is to compare the effect of two treatments,
intense (A) and very intense (B) of thinning against control plots (T), in permanent plots (2000-
2018) and to know their effect on the development and growth of the stand after the measurement
of different dasometric variables over time, biomass and fructification and their statistical analysis
using the R® software.
The treated plots show greater height, diameter, biomass, fructification, greater crown ratio and
less slenderness. The greatest changes have been observed after the application of very intense
treatments (B). We conclude that intense early non-commercial thinning in Pinus pinaster stands
has positive effects on growth, crown biomass and fruitiness, which favours a structure less
vulnerable to new fires. The results would show the effectiveness of silviculture and forestry
treatments to support passive restoration in stands with good natural regeneration and high
intraspecific competition.
