Abstract
In the last frew decades microgrids are prospering due to penetration of renewable energies in the
home sector. DC microgrids have some benefits over AC microgrids integrating DC DERs, therefore new
configurations are under study. The Helios Sharing project of the University of Alcalá (UAH) aims to convert BTSs into DERs based on renewable resources, converting them into DC microgrids.
Consequently, the construction of a microgrid prototype started at the Polytechnic School of the UAH, with a 3kW photovoltaic system. The present Master’s Thesis is part of the Helios Sharing project and presents the hardware and software implementation of the microgrid controller, implementing (with a Raspberry Pi
4) an energy management system (EMS) and a IEC61850 Server, specifically the IEC61850-7-420 which
focuses on microgrid communications. In addition, this Thesis developes a weather station connected to
an IoT cloud, and a HMI to display all microgrid’s parameters and to manuyally control it. The whole
microgrid and control system is validated through real tests along consecutive days and with different
environmental conditions.
