Abstract
Cruise tourism, which is the fastest growing tourism sector in recent decades, is often a controversial topic. On the one hand, they are a source of income for cities, as well as for shipping companies, but, on the other hand, they cause a strong visual impact and other social and spatial inconveniences in coastal populations, who suffer the inconveniences but do not usually participate in the benefits. In the case of Venice, the problem is especially serious due to the situation of the city in a shallow coastal lagoon. In their natural state, large ships could not enter, such as current cruises. For them to enter, the water inlets to the lagoon had to be enlarged and large navigation channels had to be excavated. Thus, the city has become one of the biggest attractions for Mediterranean cruises. However, along the same path that ships enter, the tide enters causing the phenomenon called "acqua alta" (abnormal elevation of the water level flooding streets and low floors) and, thereby, increasing the levels and frequencies of floods. The circulation of boats also causes problems that do not occur in other environments, the most serious being the turbidity of the water. The objective of this TFG is, on the one hand, to define the impact of the navigation of large ships on the city of Venice and its inhabitants and, on the other, to analyse the urban and environmental measures that are being taken to preserve the positive effects and minimize the negatives.
