Abstract
This article has two purposes. On one hand, it seeks to help fill the gap between training and practice, and on the
other, it will take an in-depth look at the relationship between two well-defined areas: humanities and medical sciences.
More specifically, it will examine studies on intercultural communication and healthcare for foreign populations. To do
this, it will analyze the characteristics and results of studies on aspects of healthcare carried out by future communication
specialists studying for the Master´s Degree in Intercultural Communication, Public Service Interpreting and Translation.
This Master’s Degree has been offered in nine specialties or language pairs at the Universidad de Alcalá (UAH), Madrid,
since 2006. I will focus here on research that is either directly or indirectly related to the field of healthcare. I will first
briefly introduce the characteristics of this research and its authors, follow with a preliminary classification and analysis of
the results, and outline some conclusions.
