Abstract
Global change and its effects, such as the deposition of atmospheric phosphorous and nitrogen, and climate change, are causing the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services of alpine systems. The study of the effects of these processes on diversity is fundamental, and, in this work, edaphic nematodes have been used to study the effect of P and N deposition in the soil, simulating different atmospheric deposition scenarios in four Spanish high mountain National Parks following a latitudinal aridity gradient: Teide, Sierra Nevada, Guadarrama and Picos de Europa. Nematodes are the most abundant multicellular animal son the planet, and have some properties that make them excellent bioindicators, such as their ubiquity, their multiple positions in the soil food web, their rapid response to changes and disturbances in the environment, and their ability to survive in extreme conditions. An area of each park was divided into plots, which received different fertilization treatments in a factorial design of N and P (0, 10 and 20 kg ha-1 year-1 of N and 10 kg ha-1 year-1 from P), where the samples were taken. Subsequent to the count and identification of the nematodes, through statistical analysis and calculation of ecological indices, it was observed that the treatments did not, in general, have a significant effect on the abundance and composition of the soil nematode community, while the aridity gradient and the amount of available resources had a significant and relevant effect on the nematode community. Thus, the abundance and diversity of nematodes was greater in ecosystems with more resources and more favorable climatic conditions, while decreased in more extreme environments.
