Abstract
The evaluation of the success or results is a relevant phase of an ecological restoration project, and different methods have been developed for it. In this Master thesis, the success of the initial stage (2016-2019) of the forest restoration in the Pazo do Faramello (Rois, A Coruña) has been evaluated. The restoration consisted in the replacement of the eucalyptus and black acacia plantations, which were extirpated by native species, some of which were planted. The method “The 5-Star Recovery System tool”, proposed in the International Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration, was used. This method uses a scale from 1 to 5 that represents the similarity gradient (from very low to very high) of the restored ecosystem with the reference one and allows to assign the recovery level of six types of ecosystem attributes. We also review the initial point and the degraded ecosystem. Three forest conditions were selected to evaluate the success of forest restoration: (1) a degraded forest or the area adjacent to the (2) restored forest and (3) a well-preserved reference forest, close to the restored forest. Measurements of the selected indicators were obtained from aerial photography, sampling of vegetation structure, soil analysis and data resulting from the observation of each of the three forest states. The final evaluation of the forest restoration indicates and improvement of the structure and functionality of the riparian forest, a reduction of the present threats and an increased specific and structural diversity of the ecosystem. The method “The 5-Star Recovery System tool” has proved to be a simple, understandable, flexible, cheap and fast procedure, with a visual and intuitive interpretation of the success.
