Identificar y evaluar las representaciones y percepciones de la interpretación comunitaria en la parte francófona de Bégica: un análisis de la imagen de la actividad y del intérprete comunitario

Abstract

Desde el principio de los años 90, el ámbito de la interpretación comunitaria conoce un desarrollo y una organización importantes en la comunidad francesa de Bélgica. Aunque el ámbito tiene actualmente una estructuración bien definida tanto a nivel regional como sectorial, notablemente con las dos figuras coexistentes, las cuales son la del intérprete en el ámbito social y la del mediador intercultural, la interpretación comunitaria pretende todavía alcanzar un mayor reconocimiento y nivel de profesionalización. El presente estudio procura investigar sobre la actual presencia y representación de la interpretación comunitaria, así como sobre la actual conciencia y percepción de la actividad en la parte francófona de Bélgica. Se investiga por un lado la presencia y representación del ámbito mediante el análisis de sitios web oficiales de una selección de usuarios y proveedores de estos servicios. Por otro lado, se analiza la conciencia y percepción de la actividad mediante los resultados de dos encuestas destinadas tanto a los usuarios como a los profesionales en cuestión. Los resultados obtenidos revelaron ser positivos cuantitativamente, demostrando un cierto grado de presencia y conciencia del ámbito. No obstante, cualitativamente revelaron también ciertas lagunas, fundamentalmente por la infrarrepresentación e infravaloración de la profesión y sus realidades. Por lo tanto, la presente investigación señala dichas lagunas y propone estrategias, tales como representar mejor el concepto, objetivo y dimensión cultural de la actividad y reafirmar la definición de las tareas y de los aspectos deontológicos de los dos profesionales de la interpretación comunitaria de la comunidad francesa de Bélgica. Ello tiene por objetivo contribuir al reconocimiento general y a la sensibilización del ámbito.

Since the beginning of the 90s, the field of community interpreting has undergone important development and organisation in the French Community of Belgium. While its structure is now well-defined both at the regional and sectoral level, notably with the coexistence of two figures which are the social setting interpreter and the intercultural mediator, the field still seeks to achieve a greater level of recognition and professionalisation. This paper aims to investigate the current presence and representation of community interpreting, as well as the current awareness and perceptions of that activity in Frenchspeaking Belgium. While the presence and representation of the field have been studied through the analysis of a selection of providers’ and users’ official websites, the awareness and perceptions have been analysed through the results of two questionnaires addressed to the users and the professionals themselves. The results proved to be positive quantitatively, demonstrating a certain presence and awareness of the field, yet they revealed some qualitative gaps, principally for under-representing or under-estimating the profession and its realities. The present study thus points out these gaps and presents some strategies, which include further representing the concept and objectives of the activity and its cultural dimension, as well as reinforcing the definition of the tasks and ethics of the two professions of community interpreting in the French Community of Belgium. The purpose of this is to contribute to the general recognition of the field and to raising awareness.
