Mujeres hispanas en el 116º Congreso: representatividad y diversidad

Abstract

Women have been present at the US Congress for more than a century. In fact, the first female congresswoman was the Republican Jeannette Rankin (Montana) in 1916. However, it has been in these last decades when the presence of women has been noticed in a significant number. Nearly two-thirds of all women elected to Congress since Rankin’s time have been elected since 1992, and almost half of them since 1998. When the 116th Congress was inaugurated on January 3rd, 2019, women constituted almost a fourth of it, the highest percentage in the entire history of the nation. In turn, the current Congress has the highest number of Hispanics in its history. The House of Representatives has 42 Latino members among its ranks, of which 28 are men and 14 women, while in the Senate there are four Hispanic senators, three men and one woman. In this article, we will analyze the growing presence of Hispanic representatives in the 116th Congress, indicating their most relevant positions and functions, and we will focus more specifically on the relevance of the Latino women representatives who are serving in both Houses of the US Congress.

Las mujeres han estado presentes en el Congreso estadounidense desde hace más de un siglo. De hecho, la primera mujer congresista fue la republicana Jeannette Rankin (Montana) en el año 1916. Sin embargo, ha sido en estas últimas décadas cuando la presencia de la mujer se ha hecho notar en un número significativo. Casi dos tercios de todas las mujeres elegidas al Congreso desde la época de Rankin lo han sido desde el año 1992, y casi la mitad de ellas desde 1998. Cuando se inauguró el 116º Congreso el 3 de enero de 2019, las mujeres constituían casi un cuarto del mismo, el porcentaje más alto de toda la historia de la nación. A su vez, el actual Congreso cuenta con el número más alto de hispanos en su historia. La Cámara de Representantes dispone de 42 miembros latinos entre sus filas, de los que 28 son hombres y 14 mujeres, mientras que en el Senado hay cuatro senadores hispanos, tres hombres y una mujer. En el presente artículo analizaremos la creciente presencia de representantes hispanos en el 116º Congreso, indicando sus cargos y funciones más relevantes, y nos centraremos de una forma más específica en la relevancia de las representantes latinas que están sirviendo en ambas Cámaras del Congreso estadounidense.
