If we could investigate which was the style and vocalism in the eighteenth century, we could certainly have to consult one of the most documented and valuable primary sources about the topic. Giambattista Mancini’s (1714-1800) two singing treatises titled "Pensieri e Riflessioni pratiche sopra il Canto figurato" (Vienna, 1774) and "Riflessioni pratiche sul Canto figurato" (Milan, 1777) provide us with relevant information about the aspects concerning the optimal singing technique and the interpretation of the vocal music. Through his fifteen articles the secrets of the belcanto are unravelled. The keys for understanding the messa di voce, the portamento di voce, the trill, the mordent or the cadenza are the subjects the author analyses through the fifteen articles of the treatise. His II article, devoted to the different singing schools and the most renowned performers of the moment, is not only a true statement of intent done by the author when describing extensively the teaching methods and the signing techniques, but also the path that any scholar of the historically informed vocal performances must inspect in order to reveal the true paradigm of the belcanto in the eighteenth century. This article will analyse precisely -following Giambattista Mancini’s lead- which were those singing techniques and their most relevant performers, who made the eighteenth century be known as the belcanto era.en
