Abstract
After more than 100 years of existence, "The Rite of Spring" has achieved a privileged
status both in the realm of the musical canon and of the orchestral and dance repertoire. It is
undeniable, moreover, that the work continues to exercise a particular attraction on the new
generations of spectators, which makes us reflect on what could be those characteristics that
maintain its freshness and vitality, defying the pass of time and the stylistic tendencies of the moment. In this context, the text identifies three main characteristics: ambiguity, unpredictability,
and physicality, finding a point of departure in the multiple metric and rhythmic artifices invented
by Stravinsky to keep the listeners in a constant state of uncertainty. The analysis is complete with
psychological and physiological observations based on musical cognition theories. As cases of study,
analyses of the “Ritual of the Two Rival Tribes” and the rhythmic theme of the “Augurs of Spring”
is carried out.
