Pau Casals: el artífice del Violonchelo moderno

Abstract

Para la mayoría de violonchelistas Pau Casals tiene la consideración de algo semejante a un padre violonchelístico. A menudo no se recuerdan sus grabaciones tempranas ni siquiera sus aportaciones a la técnica del instrumento, pero parece haber una noción generalizada de que, a partir de Casals y sus interpretaciones de las suites de Bach, empieza una nueva era para el violonchelo. En este artículo se examinan las características y elementos de las interpretaciones de Casals para entender su aportación a la evolución del violonchelo, y describir las razones por las que fue el violonchelista más influyente del siglo xx. A partir de grabaciones y testimonios se hará un análisis de las particularidades del estilo de Casals, comparándolo con el de sus contemporáneos, con el objetivo de acercarse a las claves musical y técnicas de su legado.

For the great majority of cellists Pau Casals is considered as something of a cellistic father. His early recordings and technical contributions to the instrument are not always remembered but there seems to be a generalised notion that, with Casals and his performances of Bach, a new era begins for the cello. This article examines the characteristics and elements of Casals’ interpretations, seeking to understand his contribution to the evolution of cello performance, and describing the reasons why he was the most influential cellist of the twentieth century. With the help of recordings and testimonial accounts, this article seeks to make a comparative analysis between Casals and his contemporaries in order to pinpoint the key musical and technical elements of his legacy.
