Abstract
The Larraun River (Northern Spain) is a limestone wet mountain river, It born in Aitzarraeta and flows into the Arakil River, It has 21km length and its basin has an area of 221km2. It has been done the evaluation of the geomorphological characteristics, the quality of the water and the fish fauna in two points of the Larraun river: Urritza and Latasa. Throughout history, this river has presented numerous negative conditions of anthropic origin, such as: dredging, canalization, construction of cuts, homogenization of the riverbanks and elimination of the riverbank vegetation. I have to highlight the canalization of some sections of the river because of the construction of the A-15 Highway in 1991 and the filtering of lots of substances from agriculture, livestock and industrial activities. Probably as a consequence of this, the geomorphological characteristics of the riverbed have been modified, the physicochemical characteristics of the water have changed and the populations of fish fauna that inhabited it have been unstructured. The river has proven to have a great capacity for regeneration, although it is not enough for populations of species of fish fauna to stabilize Actually the restoration of the different sections of the river by destroying the cuts that contain it is unfeasible, so that different techniques have been proposed for the rehabilitation of these sections. It has been proposed to improve the habitat for fish fauna by randomly disposing stones, rocks and decayed wood within the riverbed, these could improve the environment by reproducing areas suitable for rest, shelter and spawning.
