Abstract
costes supone tal recurso?
Language barriers can have negative consequences for non-English speaking patients’
health and, what’s more, lead to an increase in costs for public health. One of the solutions would
be to use professional interpreters. However, asking for the intervention of these professionals is not
common practice yet and the reason often given is the lack of financial resources. Does the use of a
professional interpreter positively impact the delivery of health care? What are the costs of such use? In order to shed light on this topic, we proceeded with a meta-analysis of 35 scientific studies
conducted in the United States that address these issues. The main result is that the improvement in
the medical management of the non-English speaking patient is noticeable and that the costs are
minimal compared to the obtained benefits.
