This Final Degree Project (TFG) presents a detailed evaluation of the inertial measurement systems (IMUs) that are typically used in applications aimed to perform a classification of human physical activity. To this purpose, a selection of devices available on the market will be used and a series of algorithms will be implemented to provide the information required for such evaluation. The selection of the devices submitted to evaluation has been carried out after a bibliographic search of the IMUs that present a level of services according to what is required for the presented applications. A total of 24 devices have been identified. Furthermore, a comprehensive classification has been made in three blocks according to their main features. The key characteristic operating parameters have been analysed as well as the most relevant technical specifications in order establish a sound selection criterion. Under this criterion, four devices have been chosen to undergo this evaluation. The evaluation to which the IMUs have been submitted has permitted to study the operation of the devices when they are used in physical activity classification applications. Two main algorithms have been implemented to obtain the Euler angles from the raw data of the accelerometer and gyroscope of the devices as well as to obtain information about the positioning. An improvement of the Euler angle estimation algorithm initially used has been proposed, and it has been confirmed that it reduces the error of deviation in the orientation signal by up to 60%. Finally, a series of tests to further verify their technical characteristics are also presented with the aim of validating the performance of IMUs. The results have been analyzed by testing different positioning locations of the devices in the human body (ankle, wrist and chest) enabling a thorough assessment of the advantages and disadvantages offered by placing the IMUs in each of these body locations.en
