This work is part of a wider project that investigates the ethnic identity reconfigurations of indigenous migrants attending high-school and university at the industrial city of Monterrey, Mexico. Specifically, the objective of this paper is to analyze their language attitudes and the way those attitudes are related to how they subjectively experience being part of a discriminated linguistic and ethnic group. Based on in-depth interviews with 63 participants, language attitudes patterns (mainly positive toward their indigenous languages) and language performance patterns (more diverse) were identified. Also, frequent experiences of changes in attitudes and ethnic identity were found to be triggered by migration and access to higher education levels. A significant fraction of the participants use their languages (generally hybridized with Spanish) in strategic ways that are informed by the language attitudes they ascribe to their partners. Nevertheless, the use of indigenous languages does not increase in most participants.en
