Actitudes lingüísticas e identidad étnica en los estudiantes indígenas migrados a la zona metropolitana de Monterrey

Abstract

Este trabajo forma parte de una más amplia investigación sobre la reconfiguración étnico-identitaria de indígenas preparatorianos y universitarios migrados a Monterrey, una metrópoli industrial mexicana. Aquí, específicamente el objetivo fue analizar sus actitudes lingüísticas, así como la relación de estas con sus elecciones lingüísticas y con su posicionamiento subjetivo como miembros de familias con hablantes de una lengua indoamericana discriminada. Mediante entrevistas en profundidad con 63 sujetos, se identificaron patrones de actitudes (predominantemente favorables) y de actuación lingüística (más diversos). Se encontraron frecuentes experiencias de transformación actitudinal e identitaria, impulsadas por la migración y el ingreso a niveles educativos de difícil acceso para los indígenas mexicanos. No obstante, esto no incrementa de forma extendida el uso de las lenguas indígenas, aunque una significativa parte de la muestra desarrolla usos estratégicos de sus lenguas (generalmente en hibridación con el español) influidos por las actitudes lingüísticas que atribuyen a sus interlocutores.

This work is part of a wider project that investigates the ethnic identity reconfigurations of indigenous migrants attending high-school and university at the industrial city of Monterrey, Mexico. Specifically, the objective of this paper is to analyze their language attitudes and the way those attitudes are related to how they subjectively experience being part of a discriminated linguistic and ethnic group. Based on in-depth interviews with 63 participants, language attitudes patterns (mainly positive toward their indigenous languages) and language performance patterns (more diverse) were identified. Also, frequent experiences of changes in attitudes and ethnic identity were found to be triggered by migration and access to higher education levels. A significant fraction of the participants use their languages (generally hybridized with Spanish) in strategic ways that are informed by the language attitudes they ascribe to their partners. Nevertheless, the use of indigenous languages does not increase in most participants.
