Abstract
Under the protocols of the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring-South Network, CALM-S, have been installed in the proximity of the Spanish Antarctic Base of Gabriel de Castilla, in Crater Lake, Deception Island, Antarctica, stations to mesure the thawing of the active layer and permafrost thermal control. Data collected by the air and ground sensors of three of these stations during 2009-2017, have been used in this paper to estimate various parameters in order to characterize permafrost.
Thermal profiles and thermograms have allowed to identify that permafrost extends from 40 cm to 450-500 cm deep, and is unstable when isolation due to snow cover is maximum. This maximum isolation is also reflected in the longer length of the thawing period and is also the reason of the variations in active layer thickness, that are not due directly to variations in air temperature. Surface and thermal offset stabilize around 0ºC from 2015, which also indicates that permafrost is unstable.
A longer number of years should be analyzed in order to confirm that the results obtained in this study will follow the same trend in the future.
